It only took an hour and a half for them to return, but it seemed like an eternity to Adam.

Darcy disappeared soon after Logan and Eve left. He figured she was checking on Sam. Maddie continued to sit with Alex’s head in her lap. She offered the occasional encouraging smile to Adam, but she didn’t say anything.

Adam sat on the ground, not daring to move, knowing that it was his job to keep an eye on Dom and make sure he didn’t do anything stupid. Not that it seemed necessary. Dom had gone a few feet away and sat hunched over his knees, face out of sight as he traced pictures on the ground with a stick.

A part of Adam wanted to find something to say to make Dom feel better, but another part of him was still mad at his friend for ignoring the rest of them. There wasn’t anything to say anyway.

When Eve burst into the clearing, both boys jumped to their feet.

“Got it,” she said. “Got two of them, as a matter of fact. Just in case.”

“How did you…?” Adam started.

“You don’t want to know,” said Logan, coming up behind Eve. “Let’s just say she has her ways and leave it at that.”

Adam figured that was fair enough. Knowing Eve, if she didn’t outright steal them, she had sweet-talked some male nurse or something.

“Do you know how to do it?” Dom asked.

“In theory,” Eve said. “But I’m not sure I’m the one…”

“I’ll do it,” said Maddie unexpectedly. “My old man had the diabetes, so I’ve some experience with needles.”

The Gylf helped support Alex’ head as Maddie slowly unfolded herself from the ground. The little people placed layers of the cooling leaves under her, and Terfol brought out another liquid concoction for her to drink.

“This will give her some added strength for the fight to come,” he said, as two younger Gylf began to pour the liquid into Alex’s mouth.

“Relax your arm,” Maddie said to Dom. Her fingers were deft at unwrapping the sterile needle and syringe. “You ever given blood, boy? Good. Right. This is just like that. Just set your arm out there and we’ll find us a vein.” She poked at Dom’s arm for a minute. “Perfect. Nice big ones. Shouldn’t hurt a bit.”

Dom looked away as the needle went in, but all the rest of them watched in fascination as his blood filled the syringe. It looked just like ordinary blood. How could that possibly do anything?

Suddenly a horrible thought occurred to Adam. “Wait! Stop. What blood type are you? And does anyone know what type Alex is? If we give her the wrong blood it could kill her!”

“O negative,” Dom grunted, and Adam sagged in relief. Type O negative was the universal donor.

“Is that what Alex is?” Eve asked anxiously.

“It doesn’t matter,” Logan told her. “O neg gives to anyone.”

Eve sighed. “Geez, Adam. Way to give me a heart attack.”

“It’s good he thought of it,” said Logan. “We need to try to think of everything.
